SAFETY TIPS FOR WOMEN
1. MAKE EYE CONTACT: you may want to lower your gaze, but DO NOT. By looking straight into the face of a potential attacker is the better option. Direct eye contact may ward off an attacker for fear that you may be able to identify them.
2. KEEP YOUR EYES AND EARS OPEN AND HANDS FREE: Be alert to who is around you. Talking on a cell phone or listening to headphones makes you an easy target. Limit the number of items that you carry. Use a purse with a shoulder strap, or a fanny pack in order to keep your hands free to defend yourself if necessary.
3. DRESS TO KILL: High heels and skirts are hard to run and fight in, scarves and necklaces can be grabbed and use to choke you. Dress comfortably and wear shoes that you can run in if necessary.
4. ELEVATOR SAFETY: When inside an elevator, stand in front of the door so that you can exit immediately if someone enters that makes you feel uneasy. Do not get into an elevator if someone else is already inside that makes you feel uneasy.
5. FIGHT YOUR INNER WOMAN: Women tend to by sympathetic – DON’T BE – Statistics clearly indicate that criminals prey on women’s sympathetic nature in order to lure them into dangerous situations. DO NOT feel obligated to be courteous to a person that makes you feel uncomfortable.
6. CHANGE IT UP: Regularly change your walking routine. Have more than one route that you can take. Take note of “SAFE PLACES” along the way.
7. BE PARANOID AND SUSPICIOUS: It is always better to be safe than sorry. When in a parking lot, take note of any strange vehicles parked to either side of your vehicle. Enter your car from the side opposite the suspicious car. Never feel funny to ask a security guard to walk you to your car.
8. RUN, RUN, RUN: Even if the attacker has a gun. Take off! It is very difficult to hit a moving target.
9. STAY PUT: DO NOT let your attacker take you to another location. If you do go to a 2nd location with your attacker it is very likely that you will be killed. Do anything and everything you can to resist.
10. GET OTHERS INVOLVED: Use your voice, scream, yell honk your horn. Make noise break things, do anything you can to attract attention and get other people that may be able to help you involved in your situation.
11. HIT THE ATTACKER WHERE IT COUNTS: The eyes, knees, throat and groin are very vulnerable targets. When you decide to fight, make sure that your first move is as FORCEFUL as possible.
12. KEEP A BARRIER BETWEEN YOU AND THE ATTACKER: Do not answer the door. Lock the doors. Stay in your vehicle. Push a shopping cart in the parking lot. Always keep something between you and him.
13. TRY ANYTHING & EVERYTHING: Offering your purse, jumping out of a moving car. Do anything that you can to attract attention to your situation.
14. EVERYDAY WEAPONS: Look around your home, garage, office etc. and find something that you could use a as weapon if threatened, i.e.: Utensils, large butcher knife, fireplace poker, baseball bat, golf club, .rakes, hammer, screwdriver, lamp, bottle, rocks, bricks, scissors, dumbbells, paperweight, umbrella, brief case. Or a weapon that you can swing i.e.: a belt with a buckle, a purse. You get the idea…..take a look around, see what you can find, use your imagination.
